Vertigo

It is the story of a San Francisco detective, John “Scottie” Ferguson, who is hired to investigate a woman with whom he gradually falls in love.  A woman, Madeleine,  who is obsessed with her suicidal great-grandmother, Carlotta, believing that she is her direct reincarnation, and thus doomed to repeat her actions.  Another Hitchcock classic, one of the markers of Madeleine’s obsessions with Carlotta, is a ruby necklace that Carlotta wears in a famous portrait that hangs in the California Palace of the Legion of Honor.  A tale of murder, fear, and fixation, check out the wonderfully eerie clip:

To Catch A Thief

A wonderful Hitchcock movie about a former jewel thief, John Robie (Cary Grant) “The Cat”, who sets out to clear his name from a current string of burglaries with the help of impetuous socialite, Francie Stevens (Grace Kelly), and her sly mother, Jessie (Jessie Royce Landis).  Set in the opulent hotels and mansions of the Riviera, it is well-known among film buffs as not only a great film, but also for being the impetus for Grace Kelly and her future husband, Prince Ranier of Monaco, to meet.
